Dr. Maria Montessori, (1870-1952), an Italian physician, she was the first to discover the need for early education. After 50 years of her working with children she developed an encouraging and stimulating Program where children could learn the skills they needed to eventually become responsible, productive, independent and loving citizens of the world. Dr. Montessori discovered that children under six have extraordinary powers of mind. They have a universal once – in – a lifetime ability to absorb knowledge from their surroundings just by living. They take in their environment, physical space, the language and Maria Montessorimovement of adults with what Montessori called “the absorbent mind“. The absorbent mind is at its peak during the pre-school years. At this age children do not need direct teaching in order to learn. She suggested the method of teaching children which offers individualized learning opportunities to assist in a child’s development of social, cognitive, physical, and creative skills. Today, Montessori schools and programs are found all over the world and more and more parents are seeking a Montessori education for their children.
